The Alfa Romeo 164 is a four-door saloon, designed by Pininfarina, which succeeded Alfetta.
The 164 was the first Alfa to have extensive use of computer-aided design to calculate structural stresses, resulting in a very rigid but relatively lightweight body. The 164 was the basis for the Type Four chassis, which it shares with the Lancia Thema, Fiat Croma and Saab 9000. Being the last to hit the market, the 164’s body was more aerodynamic and had a markedly smoother profile and a smaller coefficient of drag. In order to allow this design variation, a unique front suspension was developed.
The Alfa Romeo 164 was essential to Fiat’s plan to re-launch Alfa Romeo as a prestigious brand, with the first Alfa Romeo «new era» model, the technological and styling base for all of the following Alfa Romeo.
The 164 had a dramatically improved build quality over previous Alfas, using galvanized steel for the first time, thus ending with the most common complaint from Alfa customers about rust problems that happened to previous models such as Alfasud and GTV.
Although some purists feared Alfa Romeo’s loss of its typical front-wheel drive, the car proved to be comfortable at the highest level, with a distinct sporting character, fully in keeping with the brand’s tradition.
The 164 was designed to compete in the executive car segment dominated by the BMW 5 Series and Audi 100, offering even better value for money.
The 164 used three on-board computers, one for air conditioning, one for instrumentation and one for engine management. The air conditioner and instrument functions shared a class Z-80 microcontroller encoded with multiple modes for the operation of the instrument panel.
This Alfa Romeo 164 Turbo is only 96,000 kilometers and is in excellent condition.
